Using only natural materials, and inspired by cultural elements from our surroundings, we will embark on a journey to explore, design, and give life to the characters that inhabit within us. Over the course of a week, and through different workshops, we’ll be guided to create and embody these characters, culminating with their reveal—and celebratory introduction to the world—at the first-ever Zū Parade, here in Malpaís.
We are excited to announce some of the collaborators supporting the co-creation of the Zū Week and Carnival.
Coming from San José, Uachiman is a traditional band of Cimarrona music, a traditional style of music from Costa Rica that derives from the municipal philharmonics, with influence from the military bands of the late nineteenth century. These musical expressions are the result of a process of miscegenation between the native peoples, the Spaniards, and other peoples that arrived during the colonial era, forming part of the multicultural and multiethnic identity present in the country. In their performances, they usually wear masks representing their alter-egos. Uachiman will enliven the Carnival with their Cimarrona music as we reveal our character creations to the community in Malpaís.
We will also have the special participation of the Boruca Tribe, also called Brunka or Brunca, who are known for their vibrant, intricately carved, and painted masks. Behind the masks is a community built on rich traditions, foods, and festivals. Special thanks to FUTURO NATIVO for connecting and bringing the tribe to Zūnya.
During this week, we will see images and characters that evoke the vital force that inhabits our body, the potential of the simple, and the infinity of nature. The latent spirit of Carnival will inhabit the images we conjure, the creative processes that we embark on, and even our work methodologies.

Our food philosophy at Nula, Zūnya's kitchen, is centered around a plant-based lifestyle by inviting others to live a more conscious and healthy lifestyle and presenting new ways of treating our planet and our body. All this while creating delicious and beautiful dishes. Nula is a sacred place for people to go and feel inspired about a meal; it is also a home for those who love Mother Nature and are deeply interested in caring for and protecting her. It's about feeling nourished, loving, and caring for yourself and others. Neighborhood farmers markets are the inspiration behind each plate and local gardens can bring something collectively to the table. You will surely head home feeling happy and healthy!
You will be immersed in a 33 hectares untouched jungle sanctuary. Zūnya is hidden away from prying eyes in the town of Malpais, a secluded spot on the southern tip of the Peninsula of Nicoya, the region is one of only five blue zones in the world. The town of Malpais is the perfect hideaway, for those looking to discover an authentic Costa Rica.
